Ammolite is cut from the fossilised shells of ammonites found in southern Alberta. The colour is not a pigment or a dye. It is structural, produced by light interfering with microscopic layers of aragonite preserved from the original shell, which reflect some wavelengths back and cancel others. Tilt the piece and the colours shift, because the angle changes which wavelengths survive. The same mechanism gives mother of pearl its sheen. Sold here as pendants, rings and inlaid work.
