Dozens of lustrous, rounded crystals crowd the face in honey-gold to deep reddish-brown, each one glassy and translucent, the whole surface sparkling with facet reflections. A remnant of the pale host rock anchors one edge.

Jeffrey Mine, at Val-des-Sources (formerly Asbestos), Quebec, is a well-known garnet locality. It is a now-closed mine that produced fine grossular before it shut, so no more is being collected from it. Hessonite owes its warm colour to traces of iron within the grossular structure.

Hessonite forms deep underground where hot, calcium-rich fluids react with the surrounding rock, crystallising garnet in the altered zones. It grew on that host rock, which you see as the pale matrix at the base.

One of a kind. The specimen pictured is the exact piece you will receive.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0577/9714/8878/files/ebea2ba35ea9d622cd570a92017c1a96_20a157b6-fb71-41ae-b49c-3ff396ada8a7.jpg?v=1784707679
